Registry Compactor Question??

Has anybody had any problems at all with RC, as far as registry corruption or any other problems with the registry? I've been using NTREGOPT but RC made me a little more nervous with it's disclaimers. Should you compact and defrag the registry whenever you delete entries? I couldn't back up my registry as referenced in the help file. I back up using ERUNT. Any help would be appreciated. :?

Hi jon_fl

I use it all the time and have never had any problems at all. Also, it helps my Windows XP Pro PC run a lot faster too!!!

Thanks Cal. Do you always back up the registry. What do you think of ERUNT as a backu utility?

Hi,

No need to compact each time you clean the registry. May be once in two weeks.

Yes, you can backup using ERUNT, it's a good tool, and the most widely used.

I hope that I didn't mis-lead you in any way by saying, "I use it all the time" like Hari says, its best to use it every couple of weeks!

I've only had the opportunity to use it once (yet) and it the computer felt a wee bit faster.

Is there anything wrong with the built-in WINXP PRO back-up utility, as listed in the help file for Registry Compactor? Should I be looking at some other utility for registry back-up?

I have WIN XP Home and my backup utility wouldn't work using the instructions in the AU help file. I installed Backup, from Windows XP disc and it should be the same as WIN XP Pro. As an alternative I use ERUNT to back up my registry. It's a pretty popular app.

Personally speaking I like to use a program like Ghost 2003, Acronis True Image, Drive Image, etc. to make CD images of my partitions and hard drive. I also have a backup of my registries on CD too. This way if I am testing "Beta software" or just Final version software that might try--- if anything goes wrong I just pop in my Ghost restore floppy and restore my partitions as they were before. Also, I usually backup my partitions about every week or so because I do a lot of software testing.

IIRC, the backup utility takes backup of the system state, not just the registry. The size of the backup can be hundreds of MB, whereas if you backup just the registry, it will be just a few MB (say 15MB).

ERUNT takes backup of just the registry. Also, you can restore the registry easily with its restore program whereas it is a pain to restore using BACKUP.

I was wondering what the deal was with the "System State" stuff...

Thanks for the enlightenment
